Why transitional homes?

Homelessness in our community is more prevalent than meets the eye. In 2018, over 100 children in the Davie County School System were registered as “homeless” at some point during the school year. While many stereotypes exist around how individuals become homeless, many find themselves homeless through unforeseen circumstances that could not be prevented (i.e. single mother who loses her job through a downsizing).

In the journey towards a permanent home, every individual starts at a different place.

Through social support and the appropriate resources, each individual can find themself at a point where they are ready to have permanent housing, yet they are unable to take the critical step of renting/home ownership.

Transitional homes provide individuals a consistent place to rest as they take their next steps in finding a permanent home.

Rather than using shelters or moving from home to home, individuals now have a place to gather themselves, build community, and focus on their future. As a result, these individuals and families who utilize transitional housing for longer periods are more likely to have a place of their own one year later, according to a 2010 HUD report.

In Davie County, while there are local partners providing social support and permanent homes, there are currently no available transitional housing resources available.

Ballast Haven Homes seeks to provide this much needed resource in order to improve the well-being of individuals who find themself in the unfortunate situation of homelessness.
