What We Do
Ballast Haven Homes works as an organization with local partners to provide short-term (9-12 months) housing options for individuals or families who are on the journey to their permanent home. Our local partners provide the appropriate social support structure, while we provide the physical short-term home. This partnership is critical to ensure that both Ballast Haven Homes and our partner organizations can focus their resources to be most effective in providing support to individuals experiencing homelessness.
Through the support of donors, Ballast Haven Homes will purchase homes that meet the following criteria:
- Close proximity to necessary resources, such as transportation and social work
- Flexibility to support individuals or families, as appropriate
- Ability to be up-fitted affordably to have the space feel like home
After refurbishment is completed, we make these furnished homes available to our partners to place individuals or families who are ready to take their next step in their journey towards their permanent home. Those who are staying in our homes will continue to be supported by our partner organizations throughout their stay, and after 9-12 months, will transition to a permanent home.
Once these individuals/families have transitioned to a permanent home, we will perform any required maintenance to the home and begin the process again.
